This talk looks at a time when shipwrecks were staged in theatres, and newspaper hawkers would shout ‘shipwreck! Shipwreck!’ to sell newspapers illustrating the last devastating wreck. From the mystery of the Mary Celeste to the Franklin expedition; from Coleridge’s ‘ancient mariner’ to tales of cannibalism, learn about the strange preoccupation the Victorians had with maritime disaster and fatalities at sea.
Presented by Dr Joan Passey, Department of English at the University of Bristol.
